Senior Tax Specialist

Job Purpose
To support the delivery of the Nedbank Corporate & Investment Banking (CIB) tax strategy by providing commercially relevant tax advice, insights, and guidance to business stakeholders.
Job Responsibilities
Regulatory Impact Assessment
- Engage with CIB business units to assess the tax implications of new and existing legislation.
- Identify potential opportunities and risks for transaction structures arising from regulatory changes.
- Prepare initial tax-related inputs for internal proposals and business assessments.
Training
- Contribute to the development of tax training initiatives derived from regulatory assessments.
- Deliver tax training sessions as required.
- Provide input into ongoing formal training programmes.
- Review and contribute to tax-related training materials to ensure alignment with the organisation’s tax interpretation standards.
- Oversee the design and ongoing maintenance of the tax knowledge repository.
Tax Review & Advisory
- Identify tax planning opportunities and potential tax risks, proposing suitable structuring solutions to support sound transaction decision‑making.
- Support transaction teams throughout the approval and implementation lifecycle by providing tax‑related insights.
- Assist with preparing tax‑related content for transaction approval documentation.
- Review draft legal agreements to ensure appropriate tax considerations have been incorporated.
- Prepare briefing material for external tax counsel when required.
- Collaborate with internal finance and accounting teams where accounting treatments have tax implications.
- Participate in negotiations with clients and advisors concerning tax‑related matters within transaction documentation.
Tax Compliance – Dispute Resolution
- Prepare responses to tax authority queries or disputes.
- Compile briefs for external counsel as necessary.
Stakeholder Relationships
- Engage with senior stakeholders across CIB on technical tax matters and support day‑to‑day tax‑related queries.
Leadership
- Manage day‑to‑day operational delivery and oversee the performance and development of team members.
Essential Qualifications - NQF Level
- CA(SA)
- Postgraduate qualification in Taxation (Dip Tax / MCom Tax)
Minimum Experience Level
- 7–10 years' experience in financial services and/or tax advisory.
- Experience in banking and/or consulting environments, particularly within CIB‑related activities.
Technical / Professional Knowledge
- Income Tax, VAT, Securities Transfer Tax
- Domestic and international tax
- IFRS (with emphasis on IFRS 9)
- Tax dispute processes and procedures
