Job Purpose
Responsible for shaping and delivering robust solution designs and architectures within the payments ecosystem, specifically across issuing and acquiring for banks and fintechs. The position leads the envisioning and creation of integrated, end‑to‑end technical solutions that optimise back‑end systems, ensure scalability, and enable secure, seamless transaction flows.
With a strong blend of technical depth and strategic foresight, the role provides inspirational leadership that guides teams in adopting modern architectures, improving performance, and realising long‑term technology goals. The incumbent champions innovation, drives architectural coherence across multiple technologies, and ensures that all solutions are fit‑for‑purpose, compliant, and aligned to business outcomes.
Ultimately, this role acts as a trusted technology partner,bridging complex business requirements with visionary solution design to strengthen the organisation’s payments capabilities and support its growth in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Job Responsibilities
- Solution design / architecture within the payments space (banks & fintechs) with a focus on back-end systems related to issuing and acquiring.
- Play a leading role in designing payments solutions for issuing and acquiring and working with implementation teams in the Card Payments area within Nedbank.
- Experience with orchestration and middleware, cloud (Azure), payments systems (Postilion, CAMS, PowerCard etc.), data integration, databases, ETL, security and service exposure and consumption by other technology platforms, systems and channels is crucial.
- This position requires knowledge of engineering and software delivery and integrating and developing solutions for high-performance payments platforms and will require work across multi-disciplinary teams.
- A growth mindset and learning disposition is key since upskilling on a range of new technologies will be required.
- The Card Payments team is on a modernization journey and requires designs that are efficient, scalable and that takes advantage of modern technology solutions.
- Take proposed solutions through relevant governance forums and obtain acceptance for solutions from relevant specialists (domain or technology).
- Collaborate and communicate and obtain buy-in from key stakeholders.
- Decomposition of the solution and assisting with the scheduling/sequencing work and identification of resourcing needs.
- Flesh out designs and contribute to functional and non-functional requirements.
- Assist software designers with lower level designs.
- Troubleshoot issues relating to technical delivery.
- Design with a holistic, robust and sustainable mindset.
- Apply a product management mindset (long term thinking).
- Keep abreast of the technical landscape on how it fits together.
- Understand constraints and risk and make the necessary trade-offs.
- Influence and negotiate with key stakeholders.
- Craft the end to end solution taking into consideration: people, technology, systems and data.
- Future proof end to end solutions as far as possible within the organisation constraints.
- Continuously build and enhance the technical assets that are touched by the solution to ensure long term sustainability.
- Support the achievement of the business strategy, objectives and values
- Stay abreast of developments in field of expertise
- Ensure personal growth and enable effectiveness in performance of roles and responsibilities

Essential Qualifications - NQF Level
- Advanced Diplomas/National 1st Degrees
Preferred Qualification
BSc (Computer Science), BCom (Information Systems). Professional Qualification Level 6 (Look at new degree naming conventions)
Preferred Certifications
Togaf Certification, ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) or equivalent
Minimum Experience Level
At least 8 years on the job depending on aptitude
