Job Purpose

This role is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining reliable data pipelines and curated datasets that enable reporting, analytics, and downstream consumption. This role focuses on Microsoft SQL Server, SSIS, and SAS to deliver robust ETL/ELT processes, data quality controls, and performant data structures. Exposure to Azure Databricks and/or Microsoft Fabric is advantageous for modern cloud-scale processing and lakehouse patterns.

Job Responsibilities

Data Engineering & Pipeline Development

  • Design, develop, and support ETL/ELT pipelines using SSIS, SQL stored procedures, and SAS (where applicable).
  • Build and maintain SQL Server objects (tables, views, functions, procedures) to support analytics and operational data needs.
  • Develop reusable frameworks for ingestion, transformation, orchestration, scheduling, and monitoring of pipelines.
  • Implement incremental loads, CDC-style patterns, and robust restartability (idempotent processing).

Data Quality, Controls & Governance

  • Implement data quality checks (completeness, accuracy, duplication, referential integrity, timeliness) and automated exception handling.
  • Maintain metadata, lineage, and documentation for pipelines and key datasets.
  • Support auditability and controlled promotion across environments (dev/test/prod), including deployment standards.

Performance & Reliability

  • Optimize SQL performance through indexing strategies, query tuning, partitioning, and efficient transformation patterns.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot pipeline failures, data anomalies, and performance bottlenecks.
  • Ensure high availability and operational resilience for critical data processes.

Collaboration & Delivery

  • Work closely with analysts, modelers, reporting teams, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into scalable data solutions.
  • Contribute to Agile delivery practices (refinement, estimation, sprint planning, technical design reviews).
  • Provide production support and participate in root-cause analysis and continuous improvement.

Essential Qualifications - NQF Level

  • Advanced Diplomas/National 1st Degrees
  • Matric / Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate

Preferred Qualification

  • A relevant tertiary qualification (NQF Level 7), such as a degree or advanced diploma in Mathematics, Statistics, Quantitative Finance, or a related field.
  • A postgraduate qualification (e.g., Honours, Master’s) or professional certification such as CFA, FRM, or CQF will be advantageous.

Minimum Experience Level

  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience within a quantitative, analytical, or data engineering environment.
  • Proven experience working with SQL Server, SSIS, SAS, or similar data engineering tools.
  • Strong knowledge of data modelling, ETL/ELT development, and performance optimisation.
  • Exposure to modern data platforms such as Azure Databricks or Microsoft Fabric is beneficial.
  • Experience within financial services or banking environments will be an added advantage.
