Job Purpose

Assist with overall measurement, monitoring, and management of capital allocation across the Group within the Board-approved risk framework, while contributing to the implementation of world-class standards.

Job Responsibilities

Capital Planning Strategy Support & Planning 

  • Ensure timely and accurate execution of Capital Adequacy Projection Model (CAPM) and Economic Capital aggregation models for Nedbank Group and Nedbank Ltd, delivering reports and actionable insights for management.
  • Act as custodian of the CAPM, including oversight of model maintenance, documentation, and validation.
  • Actively participate in reviewing and challenging the Group’s capital plan by providing quantitative analysis and presenting findings to senior management.
  • Measure, monitor, and manage capital against Board-approved and Management targets, ensuring compliance and optimal allocation.
  • Maintain and enhance the Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment (ICAAP) process, incorporating international benchmarking and best practices, and produce comprehensive ICAAP reports.
  • Strategically manage capital to ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements, including preparation for regulatory reviews and audits.
  • Review and update ICAAP documentation for African Subsidiaries and Nedbank Private Wealth International, providing recommendations for improvements.
  • Assist with capital management activities in Nedbank African Subsidiaries, including preparation of capital reports and analysis of capital adequacy.
  • Contribute to ALCO, Pillar III, GRCMC, Opcom, and annual financial statements by preparing and presenting capital-related analyses and insights.
  • Challenge CAPM and Economic Capital models by evaluating input assumptions, conducting output analyses, and documenting findings to test and improve model functionality.
  • Work directly with business units to promote understanding of strategic capital management and deliver value-added contributions that enhance capital allocation and resource management.
  • Support the Group’s regulatory capital processes, ensuring alignment with Basel III/IV and internal governance standards.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across Finance, Risk, Treasury, and business units to provide insights into capital consumption, returns, and value creation, delivering presentations and reports as required.
  • Play a key role in building high-quality capital management requirements for Nedbank, including developing documentation and implementation plans.

Essential Qualifications - NQF Level

  • Matric / Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate
  • Advanced Diplomas/National 1st Degrees

Preferred Qualification

  • Post graduate degree in Statistics/Mathematics/Econometrics/Financial Risk Management/Commerce
  • FRM/CQF/CFA  

Minimum Experience Level

  • 3-5 years relevant experience in an analytical environment, ideally within capital management or financial modelling

Technical / Professional Knowledge

  • Apply capital modelling techniques to develop, validate, and improve capital adequacy and aggregation models.
  • Demonstrate Basel knowledge by ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks and preparing regulatory submissions.
  • Conduct data analysis to identify trends, assess risks, and inform capital allocation decisions, using advanced analytical tools.
  • Utilize programming skills (Python/SAS/SQL/Matlab/R Studio) to develop, maintain, and enhance capital modelling tools and automate reporting processes.
  • Apply financial modelling to support scenario analysis, stress testing, and capital forecasting, producing actionable insights for management.
  • Prepare reports and presentations to communicate analysis, findings, and recommendations to stakeholders.
