Senior Manager: Credit

Job Purpose

To review credit assessment and manage risk across lending products to provide oversight and optimise the credit portfolio quality for Nedbank.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct credit risk monitoring activities to ensure alignment with risk appetite, regulatory requirements, and credit policies.
  • Validate client information and supporting documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Analyse credit applications by assessing affordability, serviceability, risk exposure, and funding viability.
  • Approve, decline, or recommend alternative funding solutions in line with delegated authority, policy guidelines, and business strategy.
  • Provide independent credit risk opinions and challenge lending decisions, policy changes, and business recommendations to ensure sound risk management.
  • Prepare, analyse, and present credit risk reports, findings, and recommendations to stakeholders, committees, and governance forums.
  • Identify emerging risks through analysis of portfolio performance, market trends, competitor activity, and economic conditions.
  • Ensure ethical and fair lending practices by balancing customer needs with prudent risk management principles.
  • Monitor compliance with approved corrective actions, regulatory requirements, internal policies, and agreed risk mitigation measures.
  • Maintain and enhance credit policies, procedures, controls, and governance frameworks through continuous review and improvement.
  • Provide input into the redesign and optimisation of credit processes, systems, and controls to accommodate legislative, regulatory, and business changes.
  • Obtain and interpret legal opinions, regulatory directives, and governance requirements to support monitoring and decision-making activities.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders by providing specialised credit risk advisory services and securing buy-in on recommendations.
  • Manage stakeholder expectations by delivering services within agreed service levels and communicating risk matters effectively.
  • Conduct ad hoc reviews and investigations to address immediate, emerging, or heightened credit risk concerns.
  • Develop and execute annual monitoring and visitation programmes to ensure effective oversight of lending activities and portfolio risk.
  • Contribute to business performance and financial objectives through proactive identification, monitoring, and mitigation of credit risk exposures.
  • Manage departmental resources and budgets through effective planning, utilisation, and expenditure control.
  • Ensure the quality, accuracy, and consistency of outputs through regular review, monitoring, and coaching of team members.
  • Lead and develop employees through performance management, coaching, feedback, recognition, and targeted development initiatives.
  • Build organisational capability by identifying current and future skills requirements and supporting learning and development interventions.
  • Support talent acquisition, onboarding, succession planning, retention, and transformation objectives to maintain a high-performing and diverse workforce.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement across the team.

Minimum Experience Level

  • 5  - 10 Years’ Credit Assessment and decisioning experience within Banking environment 
  • Min 5 Years'  Business Banking Credit experience in a in evaluating current and prospective clients financial Statements and credit reports to determine their ability to honour debt obligations in a Commercial and Agricultural environment 
  • Extensive understanding of legalities associated with lending and collateral
  • Team Management / Leadership experience would-be advantage
  • Proven track-record on managing a large book.

Preferred Qualification

Post Graduate Diploma: Risk Management , Accounting, Finance and or Auditing.

Requirements

  • NQF Level 7 or Higher in a Financial or Banking related field essential 
  • CIMA, Credit management degree or equivalent will be advantageous
  • Own reliable vehicle and valid driver's license a must 
  • Must be prepared to travel
