Senior Associate: Sustainable Finance Solutions

Job Purpose

To maximize sustainable finance revenue streams and manage risk through identifying, solutioning, assessing and implementing sustainable finance solutions / transactions for clients across sectors and across the African continent, by collaborating with various teams. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct opportunity identification, evaluation and assessment in line with agreed strategy and established methodologies and frameworks 
  • Conduct research, perform detailed analysis, and apply systems value thinking and appropriate tools and principles. 
  • Prepare client proposals for client pitches and assist with drafting responses to Requests for Proposals (RFSs) 
  • Actively participate in deal teams when solutioning, assessing and implementing transactions by:
  • Assessing sustainability strategies, generating ideas, and structuring and/or analysing key sustainability performance indicators and targets for sustainability linked transactions and eligibility criteria for “use of proceeds” transactions
  • Applying sustainable finance principles and approved structuring and assessment methodology and approach 
  • Conducting due diligence and providing input into commercial terms as relates to the sustainable finance aspects of the transaction 
  • Liaising with key stakeholders to ensure relevant sign offs are obtained 
  • Interfacing with sustainability co-ordinator under debt syndication/auction processes and providing input into the transaction, including Q&A and ensuring relevant approvals are obtained within transaction timelines 
  • Drafting and providing sustainable finance analysis / commentary into relevant papers for approval committees 
  • Guiding and providing input into sustainability pricing for sustainable finance solution transactions
  • Preparing sustainability terms/provisions for term sheets and negotiating terms;
  • Reviewing legal documentation and sustainability terms/provisions and term negotiation;
  • Sustainability co-ordinate transactions and prepare sustainability information memoranda where Nedbank Sustainable Finance Solutions is mandated as sustainability co-ordinator under market processes 
  • Develop and draft sustainable finance frameworks for clients where Nedbank, Sustainable Finance Solutions is mandated fulfilling conditions precedent;
  • Performing assessment of performance against sustainability KPIs / “use of proceeds” when certificates are furnished by borrowers 
  • complying with internal risk policies, procedures and mandates; and ensuring regulatory compliance (sanctions and adverse media screening and adherence to FICA or KYC regulations, policies and procedures)
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders by building trust, promoting collaboration, communicating regularly, executing efficiently and complying with governance and controls.
  • Support the achievement of the team’s business strategy, objectives and values by contributing to business plans and improving systems and processes.
  • Get involved in ad hoc projects by providing research and input
  • Actively seek new solutions which could be embedded and/or positioned with clients 
  • Actively seek cross-sell opportunities for the products of other Nedbank divisions.
  • Manage personal development by acting on feedback from managers and deal team members, actively accepting on-the-job training and pursuing relevant training courses.
  • Stay abreast of evolving developments in the sustainable finance space 
  • Stay abreast of developments in Nedbank CIB and in investment banking in general.

Essential Qualifications

  • Professional Qualifications/Honour’s Degree

Preferred Qualification

  • Bachelor of Business Science 
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)
  • Honours or Masters degree in Engineering or Finance
  • Sustainable Finance Principles / Course

Essential Certifications

    Minimum Experience Level

    • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in corporate, commercial or investment banking and/or in the corporate sector in a treasury role, with a preference for experience related to sustainable finance transactions.
