Job Purpose

  • The Risk Manager ESG is responsible for identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks related to social and governance factors. This role involves developing and implementing Social and Governance risk management strategies, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and promoting sustainable business practices.

Job Responsibilities

  • Integrate, evolve, monitor, and report on Social and Governance Risk Management Framework(s) in respective forums.
  • Consult, advise and guide business on integrating Social and Governance risk into the various impacted risk management processes and frameworks, disclosures, and supporting data and infrastructure.
  • Conduct the annual review of Social and Governance Risk Management Framework(s) and other Group level risk frameworks and policies.
  • Understanding of social and governance risk and sustainability frameworks 
  • Understanding of social risk global frameworks such as then Taskforce on Inequality and Social-related Financial Disclosures (TISFD) framework and governance standards and frameworks and European Banking Authority guidelines on managing ESG Risks.
  • Understanding the link between Social and Governance and financial performance.
  • Assist with coordinating the revision of relevant Social and Governance risk appetite statements, policies and processes.
  • Manage and maintain the Social and Governance Risk Appetite process and evolve the Group Social and Governance Risk Appetite on an annual basis through stakeholder engagement. 
  • Be the Social and Governance risk brand ambassador by confidently driving awareness and training on Social and Governance risk management across the enterprise. 
  • Assist with developing and delivering Social and Governance-related risk management training and education programs to staff to ensure enhanced knowledge sharing, risk communication and collaboration.
  • Keep abreast of domestic and international regulatory and industry trends in Social and Governance Risk management to develop informed strategies to ensure risk management practices appropriately address these trends.
  • Identification and assessment of material Social and Governance-related risks, opportunities and trends across applicable risk types and portfolios and advise management on how to manage these proactively.
  • Ability to engage professionally and confidently with a wide variety of stakeholders in the private, public and non-profit sectors, and to build partnerships and manage collaborative initiatives.
  • Understanding of responsible investment, including regulatory regimes applicable to the integration of environmental, social and governance factors into investment decision-making; and of the intersection between social and governance risk and financial markets.
  • Understanding the impact of climate and environmental risks on social risks that may impact an organization. 
  • Understanding of how social and governance risks can arise from primary risks but not limited to credit, market, operational and liquidity risk types 
  • Documenting and communicating governance associated with Social and Governance risk management. 
  • Assist with the coordination of the Sustainability Risk Committee (SRC), a Group Executive sub-committee. Provide submissions, as required, to the Group Sustainability and Climate Resilience Committee (GSCRC), a Group Board sub- committee.
  • Report and present accurate and insightful Social and Governance risk management information to internal and external stakeholders (i.e. quality reporting)

Essential Qualifications-NQF Level

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental science, Business, Finance, or a related field
     

Preferred Qualification

  • Master’s degree or relevant certification (Sustainability Risk Manager (SRM) and/or e.g., CFA, FRM, or ESG-specific certifications)) is preferred

Minimum Experience Level

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in risk management, ESG, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of ESG principles, regulations, and best practices.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proficiency in risk management software and tools.
