Job Purpose
To provide independent, commercially focused corporate and commercial legal advisory services to the Nedbank Group, with specific accountability for supporting Marketing, Procurement and Corporate Real Estate portfolios. The role is responsible for managing allocated legal matters end‑to‑end, drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, assessing legal and regulatory risk, and enabling informed business decision‑making within delegated authority.
Job Responsibilities
Legal advisory and decision support)
• Provide timely, accurate and commercially sound legal advice on corporate and commercial law matters impacting the Nedbank Group.
• Support strategic and transactional decision‑making by identifying legal, regulatory, reputational and commercial risks and advising on mitigation options.
• Operate with a high level of professional judgement and autonomy, escalating matters appropriately in line with complexity and risk.
Contracting & Transactional Support
• Independently draft, review, negotiate and vet a broad range of commercial agreements, including marketing, sponsorship, procurement and corporate real estate (lease‑related) agreements.
• Ensure contractual arrangements are aligned to applicable legislation, Nedbank policies, governance standards and risk appetite.
• Maintain and enhance standard and bespoke contract templates to ensure legal consistency and efficiency.
Regulatory & Legislative Management
• Monitor and interpret relevant domestic and international legislative and regulatory developments impacting the role.
• Assess business impact and provide clear, actionable guidance to stakeholders on compliance requirements.
Stakeholder Enablement
• Provide proactive, business facing legal support to Marketing and Corporate Real Estate stakeholders.
• Deliver training, guidance and thought leadership on corporate and commercial law developments and best practice.
• Build and sustain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Legal Research and Knowledge Management
• Conduct legal research across corporate and commercial law, financial services regulation and related areas to support advisory work.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of legal knowledge, tools and practices within Group Legal and Insurance.
Accountability
The Legal Advisor is accountable to the Group Legal: Head of General Commercial and the Group Chief Legal Counsel.
Essential Qualifications
• LLB degree (or equivalent recognised law degree)
• Admission as an attorney or advocate
Minimum Experience Level
• 3 – 5 years post-admission experience, including:
• Experience gained in a law firm and/or in‑house legal environment;
• Independent management of corporate and commercial legal matters with limited supervision; and
• Hands‑on experience in drafting, reviewing, negotiating and advising on commercial contracts.
Types of exposures
Additional / Preferred Experience:
• Exposure to marketing‑related, sponsorship, procurement and/or corporate real estate (lease) agreements;
• Experience in banking, financial services or a similarly regulated environment;
• Demonstrated delivery of value‑adding, commercially focused legal advice; and
• Strong stakeholder management and influencing capability aligned to Nedbank policies and values.
