Job Purpose

  • The Credit Manager is responsible for the proactive management of financially distressed and non-performing clients. This includes understanding clients' businesses, setting appropriate client strategies, and being solution-driven.
  • This role supports the Senior Credit Manager, Credit Executive, and Divisional Credit Executive in managing a portfolio of high-risk clients through interactions with CIB IB&TS, Coverage, Property Finance, Rest of Africa, and Special Portfolio’s Credit, Legal, and Administration structures, as well as managing multi-lender situations in consortiums.

Job Responsibilities

Credit Risk Assessment:

  • Conduct thorough credit risk assessment by validating client documentation and financial information, highlighting risks and mitigants as part of comprehensive credit risk evaluations.
  • Attend client meetings and record relevant notes.
  • Prepare high-quality credit applications and provide recommendations with a focus on short-term working capital analysis, interpretation of client projections and models, and annual financial results, ensuring timely submission to relevant credit forums.
  • Apply innovative thinking to develop solutions beyond traditional credit parameters.
  • Ensure compliance with sanctioning and credit decisions based on credit policy guidelines and appropriate mandated authority. 
  • Prepare Stage 3 ECL calculations for non-performing loans.
  • Provide input for ECL and RWA forecasts in the budgeting process.
    Portfolio Management:
  • Manage daily excesses and provide recommendations.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly updates for internal watchlist reporting.
  • Manage month-end procedures including submission of Stage 3 ECL.
  • Proactively manage Probability of Default (PD) and Loss Given Default (LGD) ratings, ensuring continuous updates to financial information models.
  • Monitor the implementation of approved credit decisions and track clients’ financial health post-restructuring.
  • Seek opportunities to improve business policies, processes and systems by identifying and recommending effective ways to operate and adding value to Nedbank.
  • Research and Analysis
  • Conduct research and apply problem-solving techniques to identify and implement effective client solutions.
  • Prepare and review MIS reports for credit and operational risk monitoring, including model back-testing and calibration. Ensure accuracy of financial spreads used as input into the modelling process.
    Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across CIB IB&TS, Coverage, Property Finance, and Special Portfolio to develop tailored financial strategies for clients.
  • Engage with external parties such as clients, auditors, legal advisors, and consortium banks to support credit and restructuring processes.
    Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks and internal policies, including Basel (distressed restructures), IFRS, and tax considerations, by consulting relevant experts.
    Committee Participation
  • Actively contribute to Special Portfolio credit committee discussions with insights and recommendations.
    Present proposed client strategies for consideration at various credit committees.
    Personal Career Development: 
  • Identify training courses and career progression for self through input and feedback from management.

Essential Qualifications - NQF Level

  • BCom degree or equivalent

Preferred Qualification

  • BCom degree (Hons), preferably with Honours in Finance or Accounting
  • CA would be advantageous

Minimum Experience Level

  • 2-4 years of relevant experience
  •  Insolvency knowledge advantageous
  • A working knowledge of various bank products such as current accounts, treasury products, foreign products, asset, and trade finance.
